I would like to point out a bug, where in German language, instead of the players' names, it always writes just an "r".
Like: "r has joined the room" (of course in german)

EDIT: Another one: my RVHouse stops working (crashes) quite frequently. I simply get an error message: The program stopped working.

Mladen's been helping me out with this port-forwarding ordeal, but I don't always get online at the same time he does - so I'm kinda lost sometimes and have to rely on shitty web tutorials. Not to mention our modems aren't the same, there's obvious differences in what he tries to guide me and what I actually find.

So I've print-screened (ugh, is that even a word?) some parts of my little odyssey so you guys can tell me if I'm doing stuff the right way (and if I'm not, correct me :) )

And now I get this?... this is ridiculous, no wonder few people dare to go through with playing online. *facepalm*

RV House and its bugs.. a neverending story. I'll give you a hand.

Posted: 12 Oct 2014, 03:50

Phantom helped me out with this, and it turns out the ports needed are 2300-2400 TCP/UDP and 47624 TCP/UDP. Just though I'd highlight that because like me, many players must have been portforwarding the wrong ports all this time.

As it stands now, the RV House's router/firewall help page is obsolete and outdated. This should be fixed to prevent new and old players alike from configuring their ports the wrong way...

I've been part of this community ever since the original game came out, almost 15 years ago (not always actively in the forums), and only now I gathered willpower to go through this ordeal of portforwarding and all that stuff. This scares away potential new online players, sadly enough - if a newcomer doesn't even know how many versions of the game there are, how to you expect them to have the hard work of configuring ports to play online? Not everyone knows a lot about computers, especially young kids who are rediscovering this awesome game, much like we discovered it when we were little.

This must have been asked countless times, but isn't there a better method to connect and get RV House working and doing everything manually?...

Posted: 12 Oct 2014, 07:41
Abc
No, RVHouse needs a full rewrite, currently it uses the "old" way, standard ports and DirectPlay loobies, P2P library sucks and it still uses registry data to detect the game, and the ports info are in RVR Help, RVH "firewall help" and even in a MS page (DirectPlay ports one).

please read my guide also, and rvr help got that info too :)

Agree that it needs a full rewrite. Or at least an update to fix bugs. Otherwise it is condemned to demise in its current state. It's no surprise that fewer and fewer people use RV House these days. I've been using GameRanger for a long time now to play with my group of friends and it's absolutely easy to set things up there. The only thing new players need is the 1.2 patch and they're ready to play, nothing else.

New people care about simplicity, if it's not simple they just won't play online and they are right, and sometimes it looks like the admins in this community don't see this or don't agree with the concept. Setting things up via RV House is nothing but a pain in the bottom. If you're not a developer or if you don't have a good friend that has the time and advanced knowledge to help you, you can just forget about playing online via RV House. Now that the new Re-Volt Zone registration is also restricting many new people to create accounts, RV House looks like a small bunker with a death wish.

Is there something wrong or is it just RV House being buggy?

You're behind a NAT and thus can't access P2P, that is decentralized network, it pops because of unable to connect, probably ISP doesn't allow p2p (peer to peer)
Did you allow RVH in firewall?

Hey, not to seem ungrateful (being that I just made this account now for the purpose of posting this) but the RVZT server is down again... I recently had a wave of nostalgia come over me for some LAN re-volt and would like to spark that back up if possible.

out of curiosity, is the server having like... funding issues? Is interest dwindling? I'm not sure what to make of the forum's current activity level.

Thanks in advance!

It'll be changed anytime you have time to work on it. The sources for RV House are out there under GPL license so that the Re-Volt community has the future of RV online gaming in its own hands. So please change it to how you like and provide patches.

Much appreciated and thanks in advance!

Perfect answer, arto. One will soon realize that providing an effort oneself is not as easy as asking someone else to do the job, and that's it is easy to criticize, but hard to act. Oh, and suddenly, one will lower its level of requirement...

If you still want to race when the server is down sebr, just go to GameRanger. People have been playing there a lot and they seem to be moving, so don't need to do anything abc.

Could some supply some specific details about GameRanger,
ie : Where is it ?
What OS do I need ?
What do I need to do to ensure my system and Network/Router will allow me to play ?
Any other details ?

Download GameRanger and read more about it (homepage)
Any os works
All the information you are looking for is in the site basically.
it supports a wide range of games, runs on Mac and Windows.
Any router with UDP 1600 open just works (it uses a VLAN "hack") having dmz or game ports opened is better and preferred tho :) but the point is that it requires less than rvhouse or any standard non-NAT aware program.

ETA: Back to square one as 6 hours later it is back to not connecting to P2P again on 64 bit version.
That's rather annoying as I thought it was fixed!
The question now is why would it work for a few hours and then quit working again?

I've been having a problem connecting P2P in RV House for a couple of days. A few others have been having the same issue.
I have Win7 32 bit and Win7 64 bit installs. When I boot to the 32 bit system it always connects as it should, but the 64 bit install quit working properly. I can still race in house, but P2P never connects so I don't see everyone in the room.

I checked router, firewall, re-installed house and everything else I could think of but everything seems to be set properly.
What fixed the problem today was copying the full RV House folder from the 32 bit OS and replacing the 64 bit OS RV House folder with it. When I start RVH it fully connects on both systems now.

I then compared each file in the working and non-working RV House folders that I have and the only file that is different is the kadc.ini. My question is what exactly does the kadc.ini file do?

Thanks

I still like House better than GameRanger. :)

P2P Library is called KADC, the ini its the p2p "config", contacts folder is the peer list that kadc reads.

P2P connectivity is very flaky and its more a luck-like system

UPDATE:

I can get back to fully connected on the 64 bit version if I copy the 32 bit RV House folder and overwrite the 64 bit system's RV House.
Close rvhouse, copy the rvhouse folder from the system that works, and paste it and overwrite the files on the non-working system. Reenter house and it's blue.
If I close house and reenter, I'm sure it will be green again though.
Santi started having the same problem and this fix works for him too. I need to find out WHY this is happening and get a permanent solution.
