The audio library used in re-volt is Miles System Sound (the Mss32.dll file).
The Patch 1207, which brings 3D sound support in Re-Volt, comes with MSS version 6.0a (original Re-Volt CD came with version 5.0a).

Since last re-volt patch (1207) has been released, the MSS library has been updated several times, but last versions can't be used in re-volt as the name of some functions have changed (and maybe other internal values, who knows).

The last version I found that seems to work properly in revolt is the version 6.0m.
I have tried it with re-volt patched 1207 only, not with previous re-volt version.

Of course, I can't tell if it will actually fixes anything in re-volt, but it could be worth a try, as there is already a consistent list of bugfixes from version 6.0a to 6.0m.

You can try to search for the Mss32.dll version 6.0m file on internet, but it's not that easy to find, so I made it available on my website:

Thanks for sharing, Jigebren, even tho I didn't find it as stable as the 5.0a. I took the time to test it out, but after one race I got a crash, just as the mp3 was about to start over again.

I tried racing on another track using mp3 as well, with the same result. It happens both with Windows 98 Compatibility on and off.

Since i installed Windows7 re-volt used to freeze erratically and was very unstable. I couldn't open it again after it was minimized and it would even crash at the logo screens sometimes.
I found that the only way to make it work was using -nosound commandline. But once i updated to this version of mss32.dll all the problems were gone! I still don't know what caused the problem as everyone else with windows7 say that it works fine. But thanks for sharing this :)
